an ai visual novel that remembers my gold (and who i was rude to)
Most AI stories forget your inventory by turn 30. Soulkyn's Reverie keeps real gold, items, quests and endings while every scene is written live.

I once sold the same sword three times in an AI text adventure. Same sword. Same merchant. He paid me every time, smiled every time, and by the fourth visit I had more gold than the kingdom and a quest-giver who had died two scenes earlier asking me how the quest was going.

That’s the curse of AI storytelling. The writing is gorgeous for twenty turns. Then the ledger falls apart.

So when Soulkyn shipped Reverie this week, I went straight for the boring stuff. Not “is the prose good.” Is the gold real?

ok so what is it

Reverie landed on November 6 (the changelog has the full list). It’s a visual novel mode where 1 to 3 of your Kyns (4 in some stories) step into the roles of an authored story, and every scene gets written live, in each Kyn’s own voice. It sits in the menu under Scenarios, it’s in testing, and it’s for Deluxe and Deluxe Plus.

Authored story, live writing. That combo is the whole point. Somebody built the world, the places, the people, the endings. The AI writes how it plays out with your cast in it.

ash, a bounty, and a reeve with opinions

I started with The Wyrm of Ashfall Pass, because a mountain town buried in ash with a dragon on the only road is basically my love language.

The Wyrm of Ashfall Pass in Reverie: Ruby leads, Valtira at her side, and the town reeve already regretting them

The opening line: “Ash falls on Emberhold like grey snow. The reeve hammers a bounty to the notice board, sees the party’s weapons, and visibly decides they are her problem now.”

Visibly decides they are her problem now. I laughed out loud. Ruby, my lead, laughed too (in character, in her own voice, which is still a slightly unhinged thing to hear from a story).

Look at the top of that screen, though. Money. A bag. A journal. Pictures. That’s not decoration.

the game keeps the books

Every Reverie story has its own currency, shops, items, quests, dice rolls and secrets. Characters only tell you things once they trust you. Some doors only open if you’re carrying the right item. And when you haggle, a good argument (or good charm) can actually knock something off the price.

What I care about as a roleplayer: those numbers hold. The AI writes the scene; the story keeps the ledger. You can’t talk your way into a key you never picked up, and nobody forgets the coins you spent. (Yes, I tried. Twice.)

Your Kyns react to you too. Do something they like and you see a little ♥ +1. Do something gross and it’s 💔 −1. And the NPCs you meet remember how you treated them, so the merchant I was rude to in act one was, let’s say, not in a discount mood in act three.

Fair. I deserved that.

about character.ai’s stories mode

People keep comparing this to Character.AI Stories, so let’s do it properly. Stories launched in late 2025 as a guided choose-your-own-adventure: you pick a few characters and a genre, set a premise, and branch through choices with AI images (Engadget covered the launch). It’s a good format. What nobody reported it having was an inventory, quests or an economy.

There’s also the obvious elephant. Character.AI is in Chapter 11, the court approved the bidding rules on November 4, bids are due November 24, and an auction is set for December 1 if anyone tops Disney’s opening bid (details here). If your campaign lives there, I wrote a checklist on what to look for before you move it.

what a run actually feels like

You pick a choice (A, B, C, your keyboard works) or you type what you do in your own words, and the story follows what you actually did. Not a menu pretending to be freedom. If you type “I pocket the bounty notice and walk off,” the reeve notices.

Things I’m already attached to:

  • Every line is read aloud, each Kyn in their own voice, free. Turn on auto-read and it plays like an audio drama.
  • Pictures of a Kyn, a character or the whole scene. The first one each scene is free.
  • Rewrite when a scene lands wrong.
  • 3 save slots per story, on any device.
  • An endings collection on each story’s page, some of them secret. I’m at one ending in Ashfall. The completionist in me is screaming.

And as of today, November 8, every scene in every story has its own instrumental music. Ash falling over a slightly melancholy little folk tune, recorder and hand drum, hits different, I’m not gonna lie.

where i’d start

Ten stories so far. Six are free for now (The Lantern Market, The Great Cat Café Crisis, The Keeper of Gullhaven Light, The Velvet Masquerade, The Snowbound Onsen, Terms & Conditions) and four unlock with souls, once, replayed forever: The Wyrm of Ashfall Pass, Neon Last Mile, The House of Open Doors and The Silk Block.

If you’ve never played one, start with The Lantern Market. One night, one stolen bell, a market that moves when you blink. It’s short enough to learn the rhythm and weird enough to show you what live writing can do.

Then go find a dragon.

Open Reverie, or if you need a party first, browse some Kyns and recruit.

Just don’t sell the same sword three times. This time somebody’s counting.

The Gate is Open
